Blank & Printed Aluminum Cans

alna packaging blank and printed aluminum cans
Finding the right can size for your drink shouldn’t be complicated. At ALNA, we focus on Standard and Sleek cans, the two industry standards that offer the most versatility for beverage producers. Our cans are selected to ensure consistent performance on filling lines and to provide a clean surface for your brand's artwork.
‍
We offer a variety of can options to fit different business needs: blank cans for those seeking lower minimum order quantities, printed cans for established brands ready for high-volume production, and sleeved cans as a versatile middle ground. Each option provides reliable quality, with choices suited to businesses of all sizes and models.

Your Brand, Your Can

What are standard, sleek, and slim cans?

Yes, the names kind of give it away, the main difference lies in the can body diameter and the can ends / can carriers options.

Standard Cans: Body Dia. 66 mm, fit 202 Can Ends
Sleek Cans: Body Dia. 57 mm, fit 202 Can Ends
Slim Cans: Body Dia. 53 mm, fit 200 Can Ends (*currently unavailable)
‍
The familiar 355 mL / 12 oz standard cans are great for a wide range of drinks. For something that feels more premium, you might consider the smaller 250 mL size. Sleek cans, on the other hand, are taller and often perceived as more elegant or health-conscious. It's all about choosing the style that best fits your beverage and brand identity.

Should I choose blank or printed cans?

It really depends on your brand's needs and the quantity you're looking for.

Printed cans allow for up to 7 colors, offering high-quality, detailed designs. However, they come with a higher minimum order quantity (MOQ).

Blank cans can be ordered in smaller quantities, even as little as a pallet. There's no one-size-fits-all answer; it's about what aligns best with your brand's vision and requirements.

What are Epoxy and BPANI internal coatings?

Epoxy and BPANI are types of internal coatings used inside cans to protect the beverage and preserve its taste.

Epoxy: the traditional choice, is widely recognized for its robust protective qualities and has been a reliable standard in the industry.

BPANI, or BPA-NI (Bisphenol A Non-Intent): a newer alternative that also offers strong protection, with an additional focus on health and environmental considerations.

Both coatings are effective, and the choice between them depends on your beverage type and your brand's specific priorities and standards.

What are matte, gloss, tactile, and retort?

Can varnishes add both protective and aesthetic qualities to your cans.

Matte and gloss finishes affect the can's look and feel, with matte being more subdued and gloss offering a shiny finish.
‍
‍Tactile varnishes add a physical texture to the can's surface, enhancing the consumer's handling experience.

Retort is used for cans that undergo high-heat processing. It is applied to the cans that are destined to undergo high-heat processing, such as in the case of canned foods that are sterilized through retort processing.

Cans that Fit Your Needs

Blank Cans

The fastest way to get on the shelf. Blank aluminum cans are ideal for reducing lead times and minimizing inventory risks for local launches or small-batch runs. Ready to ship from our Canada facility to help you scale faster.

Note
If you are running a 100-case batch, blank cans plus a high-quality label usually beat the lead times and costs of printed options.

Printed Cans

Built for scale and brand consistency. Our high-volume printed cans support up to 7-colour designs, offering the lowest unit cost for established brands ready for large-scale production runs.

Note
Traditional dry offset printing is the industry standard for colour accuracy and speed once you reach truckload volumes.

sleeved-cans-comparisons

Shrink-Sleeved Cans

Shrink sleeves provide seamless coverage from the base to the neck, reaching the "shoulder" area where labels stop. This is the most effective way to achieve a premium, fully branded look without the high-volume commitments of traditional printing.

Note: Process (CMYK) vs. Spot Colors
While shrink sleeves support both, using spot colours for your vector logos and text will result in sharper edges and more consistent branding.

Aluminum Can Layers

An aluminum beverage can might seem simple, but it's actually made of several different layers stacked together. Each layer serves a specific purpose, protecting what's inside, protecting the can itself, and displaying your design and information clearly. Here's a quick breakdown to show what each layer does.

Retort Cans
Regular Cans
Layers What does it do?
Internal Liner A thin coating (epoxy/bpani) inside the can that protects your beverage from contacting aluminum directly. So you don't taste metal and prevents contamination.
Exterior Base Coat A primer like layer applied on printed cans to create a smooth surface. It helps inks adhere better and makes the colors appear clear and consistent.
Printed Ink The colored inks used to print your designs directly onto the can surface.
Overvarnish A clear protective coating (usually gloss/matte) applied on top of the printed inks. It protects the design and prevents scratches, scuffs, and corrosion.
